Why do the random palettes look harmonious?

Hues are spread around the color wheel using the golden angle (137.5°), so the gaps between them are even rather than clustered. Saturation is constrained to roughly 40–92% and lightness to 22–78%, which keeps the set from turning muddy or washed out.

Why random palettes can still look coherent

Truly random RGB values almost always look bad: colors cluster, everything is equally loud, and nothing recedes. A useful random palette generator is therefore not random at all — it samples from a constrained space. Two constraints do most of the work here.

Even hue spacing

Hues are placed around the color wheel using the golden angle, about 137.5°. That is the same relationship that produces even packing in sunflower seed heads: successive values never land on top of each other and never form obvious clusters. The result is a set of hues that are clearly different from one another but evenly distributed, which reads as deliberate rather than accidental.

Bounded saturation and lightness

Random saturation produces either neon or grey. Constraining saturation to roughly 40–92% and lightness to 22–78% removes both extremes, so every swatch is vivid enough to be useful and dark or light enough to be legible. Varying lightness across the set also creates hierarchy — which is what lets you assign roles to the colors afterwards.

How to use a generated set

Treat the output as a starting point, not a finished system. Assign roles first: the most saturated color becomes the accent, the lightest becomes a surface tint, the darkest becomes text. Then decide whether the palette needs a neutral — most do, and a near-grey for body text and borders is usually worth adding by hand.

Next, check the combinations you will actually ship. Run text against background through the WCAG contrast checker; a palette that looks good on swatches can still fail as body copy. If a pair fails, keep the hue and shift lightness until it passes.

When you like a set, save it with the favorites button and use the share link to send the exact colors to a colleague. Exporting as CSS variables or a Tailwind block means the palette becomes tokens instead of five hex values in a chat message.

When to use this instead of the other tools

Use random generation when you are exploring and have no constraints. If you already have a brand color, the palette generator will produce a more defensible scale, and the color wheel is the better tool when you specifically need a contrasting accent.

Why do the random palettes look harmonious?

The generator spaces five hues around the color wheel using the golden angle (137.5°), so hue differences are even rather than clustered. Saturation is constrained to roughly 40–92% and lightness to 22–78%, which avoids muddy or washed-out colors.
